The North Carolina Highcountry has more visitors than Myrtle Beach, the Outer Banks or any other single attraction in the Carolina’s. The Great Smoky Mountains are one of the most popular tourist destinations on the east coast and attract travelers from around the world. The best part is the area is so large, you still feel secluded and can find your own private oasis to get away from the world.

Attractions include some of the greatest features of the Carolinas including Grandfather Mountain, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Whitewater Rafting, Rock Climbing, Bird Watching, the Highest Skiing on the East Coast, and much more.
North Carolina is home to the Linn Cove Viaduct, which was the last part of the Blue Ridge Parkway to be completed in 1989. The viaduct stands on the back side of Grandfather Mountain in a pristine forest the is undisturbed by the elevated roadway.

Grandfather Mountain State Park and Grandfather Mountain Conservancy are one or the premier area attractions bringing not only local and worldwide visitors, but movie crews. Part of the movie Forest Gump (2:55 into the youtube clip) was filmed here along with many care commercials. It’s also home to a wildlife preserve with deer, bear, eagles, otters, and much more. It’s a must see for those visiting the area.

While the western US hosts some of the most violent whitewater in the world, the east is home to the best variety of rafting. Best known for the movie Deliverance, with Burt Reynolds, east coast rivers deliver everything from float trips up the New River into Virginia to class II, IV, and V trips all over western North Carolina.

Like rafting, the western US is home to some of the most challenging rock climbs in the world, like Half Dome and El Capitan at Yosemite; but nowhere is the terrain as diverse as the Highcountry, providing beginner climbs and extremely challenging assents.

Birdwatching includes more than 450 species, from songbirds to owls and Bald Eagles. People come from all over the country to birdwatch in the Carolina Mountains. Highcountry is also home to the highest ski slopes on the east coast (Beech and Sugar Mountains).
